Flamingo Past XI 152-6
Flamingo Present XI 150-8
Result: Flamingo Past XI won by 2 runs

To round off a memorable weekend, Flamingo CC celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the present team playing a team of “old boys” in a 25 over contest. Many faces from years gone by took the trouble to attend & many memories were revisited.

Skippered by Stu Shapland, the Past XI elected to bat and openers Adrian Small & Stu Brittan made a cautious start. After a couple of sumptuous shots Brittan (7) was stumped by present day skipper Rich Manthorpe off the bowling of Mark McLeonards. Veteran 2nd XI skipper Adie Heath was delighted to deceive Paul Gover (11), bowling him with an inswinger! He then had Mike May caught by Steve Wright without scoring. Small (46) fell to Ashley Ames – not to be outdone brother Jon had Shapland (27) stumped & then trapped Ian Berrill lbw first ball. Batting stars of yesteryear Rob Owens (19*) & Bruce Cooper (17*) guided the Past X1 to 152-6.

In reply Ian Heath (0) soon fell to the wiles of Shapland. Chris Greer (19) & Jon Greer (12) batted steadily but when they departed the Present X1 were in need of quick runs. Tony Rolfe (31) upped the rate before he was caught behind by Cooper off a rejuvenated Chris McLean (there was a rumour he had retired!!). He then proceeded to bowl Steve Wright (14) at which stage 50 runs were needed from 6 overs remaining. Ashley Ames (35 off 20 balls) ensured a close finish hitting three mighty sixes before the evergreen Shapland bowled him in the final over attempting yet another big hit. Ian Rosenburg (2) & Adie Heath (2*) just failed to see the Present XI over the line as they finished on 150-8. An enjoyable encounter.

Post match a hog roast was provided for all followed by end of season presentations & awards. A bouncy castle kept the numerous children fully entertained.

Special thanks are due to the Greer brothers, Chris & Jon whose efforts were largely instrumental in making the day such a success.
