Flamingo CC Select XI v Lashings World XI Friday 4th September 2009
Lashings World XI 215-3 Flamingo Select XI 166-6 Result: Lashings won by 49 runs
For the 3rd year running Flamingo CC were privileged to host the Lashings World XI.
Chairman Robin O'Grady had assembled a Flamingo Select XI to challenge the might of Lashings in a T20 game sponsored by Williams de Broe.
Nearly 300 guests enjoyed a pre match lunch with entertainment provided by the incomparable duo Dave Lee MBE & Scott Charlton who were joined by the iconic Henry Blofeld of Test Match Special fame. Henry Olonga once again delighted us with his rendition of “Nessun Dorma” (see video below).
Batting first, the Lashings openers Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe & former Hampshire favourite Gordon Greenidge immediately treated the spectators to some fine stroke play. When Greenidge (35) was run out, current Hampshire top order batter Sean Ervine entered the fray blasting 5 sixes in a quick fire 52 runs.
Guest player Nigel Pascoe then thrilled the crowd, hitting Flamingo protégé Steve Wright for six over the deep mid wicket boundary. Brendan Taylor eventually holed out at deep square leg for an entertaining 94 runs including 8 sixes. It was left to Phil Defreitas to smite two enormous sixes in the last over to boost the Lashings total to a formidable 215-3.
Commentary was provided by Henry Blofeld & Henry Olonga – a special treat.
Needles to say a target of over 10 runs per over was always likely to be beyond the Flamingo Select XI. Adrian Small (22), Tim Anstee (27) & Martin Vanstone (24) made useful contributions against the experienced Lashings bowlers. Flamingo legend Stu Shapland (60*) & Sam Strange (16*) introduced some respectability to the scoreline as the Select X1 finished 49 runs adrift on 166-6.
Another memorable day in the annals of Flamingo CC.
